A devastating multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia, left five people dead and sent 34 others to local hospitals early Friday morning, according to state police.
The collision occurred around 2:35 a.m. as vehicles were slowing down for an upcoming construction area. Authorities reported that a bus failed to brake in time, triggering a chain-reaction collision that impacted six other vehicles.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that traffic was slowing southbound for an upcoming work zone,” Virginia State Police stated in an official news release. “A bus failed to slow for traffic and struck six vehicles.”
All five of the fatalities were occupants of the vehicles struck by the bus. Among the 34 injured individuals taken to nearby hospitals, police confirmed that three remain in critical condition.
At this time, officials have not released details regarding the type of bus involved, its destination, or the exact number of passengers it was carrying.
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation. State police noted that charges are currently pending as investigators piece together the sequence of events.
The aftermath of the collision severely disrupted morning travel, leaving all southbound lanes of I-95 closed for more than seven hours while emergency crews cleared the wreckage and investigators documented the scene. Traffic was detoured around the area throughout the morning.
