Mayor Adams Mourns “Hero” Officer Islam; Police Commissioner Details Suspect’s Cross-Country Journey and Mental Health History
NEW YORK, NY. – A horrific shooting at a bustling Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday evening left four innocent people dead, including a New York City police officer, in what Mayor Eric Adams decried as “another senseless act of gun violence.” The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura of Nevada, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The tragic incident unfolded at approximately 6:28 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, a building housing prominent financial firms and the National Football League.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided a preliminary account, stating that 911 calls flooded in for an active shooter. Surveillance video shows the male suspect exiting a double-parked black BMW on Park Avenue, carrying an M4 rifle, and walking towards the building’s entrance.

“It’s never, never gets easy,” Mayor Adams stated, reflecting on previous tragedies. “I always go back to the beginning of my role as mayor, in Harlem Hospital, where officers Maura and Rivera were assassinated. I remember watching their family members enter the hospital. I thought about that today when the notification came over from the police commissioner.”
The fallen officer was identified as Ditarul Islam, 36 years old, a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the NYPD, serving in the 47th Precinct. “He was doing what he does best in all members of the police department, carry out. He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers,” Mayor Adams said, highlighting Officer Islam’s immigrant background from Bangladesh and his deep love for the city.
“He’s a true blue New Yorker, not only in the uniform he [wore] but in his spirit and energy of love in this city.” Mayor Adams met with Officer Islam’s family, noting, “This was his dad, only son. I think about Jordan, my child, and it is unimaginable to experience a loss of this magnitude.” Officer Islam was married with two young boys, and his wife is pregnant with their third child.

Commissioner Tisch detailed the shooter’s actions, stating that surveillance footage shows Tamura entering the lobby, immediately opening fire on an NYPD officer, then shooting a woman who took cover. He continued through the lobby, spraying gunfire, before reaching the elevator bank where he shot a security guard.
One additional male in the lobby was also injured and is currently in critical but stable condition at the hospital. The shooter then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, which is home to Rudin Management, and began firing rounds as he walked the floor. One person was struck and killed on that floor. He then proceeded down a hallway and shot himself in the chest.
In total, four victims were shot and killed, including the police officer.
The shooter, Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old male with a Las Vegas address, also died.
Inside his Nevada-registered vehicle, officers found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and medication prescribed to Mr. Tamura. The vehicle was searched by the bomb squad and found to be clear of explosives.
The initial investigation indicates Tamura’s vehicle traveled cross-country, through Colorado on July 26th, then Nebraska and Iowa on July 27th, and was in Columbia, New Jersey, as recently as 4:24 p.m. today before arriving in New York City.
According to law enforcement partners in Las Vegas, Tamura has a documented mental health history. His motives are still under investigation, and authorities are working to understand why he targeted this particular location, which includes tenants like the NFL, Rudin Management, KPMG, and Blackstone.

Four other victims sustained minor injuries while attempting to flee the scene. Victim names are being withheld pending family notification. Officers are conducting a secondary sweep of the entire building, but authorities believe this to be a lone shooter and that there is no longer an active threat to the public.
“No words can describe this act of evil and the lives of others who are innocent. No words can fill the void that has been left by this tragedy,” Mayor Adams expressed. “Our hearts are heavy. We pray for the swift, safe recovery of the injured. This horrific crime reminds us all how easy it is to gain access to a gun. Gun violence has scarred so many neighbors and ripped apart too many families across this entire country, and we will continue the fight to do all we can to protect our city.”
