Death Investigation Underway Following Discovery At Hernando County Jail

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A male inmate died after being found unresponsive in his cell at the Hernando County Detention Center Wednesday.

The discovery occurred at approximately 4:48 a.m. during a routine inmate count. According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate was the only person assigned to that specific cell.

Following the discovery, a detention deputy alerted the facility’s medical unit. Deputies and nursing staff entered the cell to perform lifesaving measures until Hernando County Fire Rescue arrived. Paramedics continued medical treatment at the scene and during transport to a local hospital.

Medical staff pronounced the inmate deceased at 5:23 a.m.

The individual had been in custody since March 4, 2026, on various drug charges. His identity is currently being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.

The body was transported to the District 5 Medical Examiner’s Office in Leesburg for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. No further details have been released.
