A punishing stretch of winter weather has gripped a massive swath of the country, sending wind chills plummeting to dangerous lows across the Plains and Midwest on Monday before shifting its icy gaze toward the East Coast.
The Arctic blast is proving relentless. As Americans in the central U.S. woke up Monday, they faced air so cold that it created an immediate risk of frostbite. Minneapolis recorded a wind chill of minus 30 degrees, while Cedar Rapids, Iowa, dropped to a staggering minus 27.
The cold front didn’t spare the Great Lakes. Green Bay, Wisconsin, shivered at minus 22 degrees. In Chicago, the famous wind lived up to its name; gusts threatening to hit 35 mph drove the “feels like” temperature down to minus 22, turning the morning commute into a battle against the elements.

This freeze has an unusually long reach. Even Florida, typically a refuge from winter’s bite, felt the impact Monday morning. Wind chills dipped into the 20s across North Florida and hovered near the freezing mark of 32 degrees in Central Florida, prompting a rare shiver in the Sunshine State.
The Eastern March
The system is now on the move. By Tuesday morning, the Midwest will see only a marginal improvement, with Minneapolis forecasting a wind chill of minus 12 and both Chicago and Detroit sitting at minus 8.
However, the Northeast is next in line for the deep freeze. As the front pushes east, residents from Pennsylvania to New York are bracing for a bitter Tuesday. Pittsburgh is expected to see wind chills hit minus 12, while Buffalo dips to minus 9.
Major metropolitan hubs along the I-95 corridor won’t escape the drop. New York City and Philadelphia are forecast to see wind chills in the single digits—around 5 degrees—while Washington, D.C., will likely wake up to a feels-like temperature of 7 degrees.

Snow in the Forecast
It isn’t just the cold. The interaction between the Arctic air and the relatively warmer waters of the Great Lakes is cranking up the lake-effect snow machine. From western Michigan over to Buffalo, snow bands could dump between 6 and 12 inches of fresh powder through Wednesday, complicating travel in an already hazardous week.
With temperatures this low, officials are reiterating the dangers of prolonged exposure. Hypothermia and frostbite can set in within minutes when wind chills drop below zero. Residents in affected areas are urged to limit time outdoors and cover all exposed skin as the system grinds its way across the map.
