Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been elected as the next Governor of New Jersey, defeating Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli in a closely watched contest. Ciattarelli had received an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
The victory marks a significant political milestone for the New Jersey Democratic Party, as Sherrill will succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. This win ensures that the Democrats will hold the governor’s mansion for a third consecutive term—a feat not accomplished by one party in New Jersey since 1961.
The race attracted national attention, with political analysts viewing it as a potential bellwether for the 2026 midterm elections. Sherrill’s win offers a boost of confidence for national Democrats.
Sherrill, a Navy veteran, previously represented a northern New Jersey district in the U.S. House of Representatives for four terms. She will make history as the state’s second female governor.
Following the announcement of her victory, Sherrill posted a short message on X expressing her gratitude to voters. “It is the honor of my life to earn your trust to become this great state’s 57th Governor,” the Democratic candidate wrote. “I promise to listen, lead with courage, and never forget who I serve.”
