A deep fissure has opened within the Democratic Party following the end of the 43-day government shutdown, with progressive members openly challenging the leadership of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

The internal conflict intensified after the shutdown ended without Democrats securing any wins, specifically failing to secure subsidies to help cover Obamacare plans.

The crisis point came when six Democratic House members voted with the majority of the Republican caucus to reopen the government, sparking fury among colleagues who believed the party caved on its core demands. Democratic leaders are now facing fresh scrutiny from their own members for ending the shutdown “without winning anything major in return.”

Amid the leadership questions, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was pressed on the growing calls to replace Schumer.

While one of her progressive colleagues on the panel suggested that the “unprecedented moment… demands that we consider… the time for new leadership,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez took a more cautious approach when directly asked if Schumer should remain in his post.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez deflected the direct criticism of the Minority Leader, stating that the problem facing the party is “bigger than one person” and “bigger than the minority leader in the Senate.”

She urged members to focus on the bigger picture of internal change, directing attention to current Senate primary elections as a means to select new leadership, rather than the distant New York primary.

The sentiment for a leadership change has been echoed by others in the party, including Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), who called for a “new generation of leaders.”

Booker stated, “The Democratic Party needs to change. It is time for a new generation of leaders to stand up to Trump and to all those complicit in sabotaging the American dream… if the Democratic Party is to deliver new leaders must rise stand and fight.”

The internal strife suggests a looming battle for the party’s direction, with speculation that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries could also become a future target for progressive dissatisfaction, continuing the post-shutdown power struggle.
