A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot and killed with his own service weapon on Friday after responding to a minor vehicle crash, police confirmed.

Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was shot multiple times on the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street after a verbal dispute with a man involved in the traffic incident escalated into a physical altercation. According to Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, the suspect managed to disarm Deputy Jaramillo and used the weapon against him. Sheriff Cordero-Stutz emphasized that the attack was “not an ambush.

Deputy Jaramillo was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Following the shooting, the suspect, identified as Steven David Rustrian, 21, took his own life inside his vehicle. A second subject involved in the initial crash was detained but later released without charges.

Sheriff Cordero-Stutz remembered Deputy Jaramillo as a “home-grown hero,” a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Central Florida who was dedicated to public service in the Kendall District.

The sheriff’s office and Florida leaders, including Gov. Ron DeSantis and Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, shared condolences and tributes over the weekend, mourning the loss of the deputy. The sheriff’s office homicide bureau is investigating the incident.
