TAMPA, Fla. – In a display of rapid response, Governor Ron DeSantis was on hand this Friday morning at Tampa International Airport to personally greet flights carrying Jewish Americans escaping the escalating conflict in Israel.

The rescue operation, spearheaded by the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), has so far brought approximately 1,500 people to safety, highlighting Florida’s proactive role in international crises.

“It’s a very scary time,” remarked Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, acknowledging the immense stress and fear faced by those fleeing the missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. Two rescue flights carrying around 300 individuals have already touched down in Tampa, with an additional 1,100 finding refuge aboard a coordinated cruise ship.

Adding a powerful voice from the ground, Florida Senator Jay Collins, currently in Israel, spoke with Fox Live Now Friday, underscoring the state’s resolve.

“I was a Green Beret for 23 years. Obviously, being in combat is something that’s not new to me,” Senator Collins stated. “And when American citizens are in harm’s way, I think as an elected official, we have a responsibility to take care of our people. We’re not leaving any Americans behind. We’re going to take care of anybody who wants to get back to the U.S., Florida will stand up and bring them home again.”

This effort saw Governor DeSantis help coordinate four wide-body planes to fly all U.S. participants of Birthright Israel programs directly to Tampa.

The action was a direct response to the heightened tensions and missile exchanges that have gripped the region, leaving many Americans stranded and desperate to return home.

The Central Florida Iranian and Jewish communities have been closely monitoring the Israel-Iran conflict, with many expressing profound concern for their loved ones abroad. Florida’s swift and decisive evacuation mission has offered a beacon of hope amidst the global uncertainty.

Governor DeSantis emphasized the ongoing nature of the mission, stating that the Florida Division of Emergency Management continues to work tirelessly to assist more Americans in returning home.

The scene at Tampa International Airport was one of profound relief and gratitude, as families reunited and individuals found respite from the conflict zone. Florida has once again demonstrated its commitment to its residents, and indeed all Americans, in times of urgent need.
