Florida’s highest court has a new member. Governor Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday that he is elevating Judge Adam Tanenbaum from the state’s First District Court of Appeal to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court of Florida.

The appointment taps a legal veteran with deep ties to the state’s legislative and executive branches. In his announcement, DeSantis praised Tanenbaum’s track record and judicial philosophy.

“Congratulations to Florida’s new Supreme Court Justice Adam Tanenbaum,” DeSantis said. “He will be a bold and fearless jurist!”

Tanenbaum has served on the First District Court of Appeal since 2019. During his tenure on the appellate bench, he built a reputation for high productivity and engaging with complex constitutional questions. He has participated in over 170 appellate opinions, authoring more than 90 majority opinions and penning three of the court’s seven en banc opinions.

His docket has frequently included high-stakes litigation, ranging from election law disputes to cases defining the separation of powers and civil rights within the state.

Before donning the robe, Tanenbaum spent years navigating the inner workings of Florida’s government. His resume includes stints as General Counsel for the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Department of State. He also previously served as the state’s Chief Deputy Solicitor General.

A University of Florida alumnus, Tanenbaum graduated as co-valedictorian with a degree in political science before earning his law degree cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center.
