From Bank Robberies to Border Security: The Growing Threat of Jamming Technology

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a stark warning on June 18, 2025, concerning a dramatic increase in the smuggling of Chinese-manufactured signal jammers into the United States. These illicit devices, capable of disrupting a wide range of radio frequencies, pose a significant threat to public safety, civilian aviation, emergency response, law enforcement, and critical infrastructure.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reported an alarming 830% surge in seizures of signal jammers since 2021, despite concerted efforts by Chinese technology firms to evade inspection.

This rise in contraband is particularly concerning given the potential for these devices to facilitate criminal activity and undermine national security.

Instances of signal jammer use in crimes are already on the rise. Reports indicate that illegal aliens from South America have employed these jammers to disrupt communications with local police during home invasions and bank robberies across several states, including Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, and Virginia.

Recent examples include the recovery of a signal jammer in February 2025 during the arrest of an illegal alien from Chile in Texas, and a similar incident in December 2024 where a criminal utilized a jammer during a burglary response by law enforcement.

A DHS spokesperson underscored the severity of the threat, stating, “Signal jammers have been used by illegal aliens across the country to jam communications during police operations, bank robberies, burglaries, and other dangerous crimes. Under the vigilance of CBP, national security begins at America’s ports. As Chinese manufacturers attempt to smuggle signal jammers, we will continue to seize these tools of terrorism. President Trump and Secretary Noem will always protect America’s critical infrastructure and law enforcement.”

U.S. federal law explicitly prohibits the private import, operation, marketing, or sale of any signal jamming equipment that interferes with law enforcement communications, GPS, or radar.

The DHS highlights a potential avenue for international cooperation on this issue, noting that signal jammers are also banned for public use in Beijing, suggesting that Chinese counterparts may be amenable to collaborative efforts to curb this illicit trade.
