British authorities took Peter Mandelson, the former United Kingdom ambassador to the United States, into custody on Monday as part of an ongoing investigation into misconduct in public office. The arrest follows intense scrutiny over Mandelson’s past relationship with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers arrested a 72-year-old man at a residence in north London. While the department did not officially name the individual, consistent with standard U.K. policing protocols regarding suspects who have not yet been charged, the man has been widely identified as Mandelson.

The investigation focuses on claims that Mandelson may have shared sensitive government information with Epstein roughly 15 years ago. Investigators have clarified that the current probe is strictly centered on the mishandling of official information and does not involve any allegations of sexual misconduct.

This development occurred just four days after a similar arrest involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew. The former royal was also taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct related to his own ties with Epstein.

Mandelson’s professional downfall began in September when he was removed from his diplomatic position. His dismissal followed the leak of emails indicating he had maintained a friendship with Epstein well after the financier’s 2008 conviction for sex offenses involving a minor.

The Metropolitan Police launched their formal criminal inquiry last month after new documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice provided additional details regarding the nature of their communication.
