Barricaded Man Shoots Himself In Condo After Standoff With Sarasota Police

SARASOTA, FL. – The standoff with a man in a Sarasota condo has ended with the suspect shooting himself Saturday morning.

Police say, just after 7:30 a.m., Sarasota Police Officers found the man dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Earlier, Sarasota police were in negotiations with the man that has barricaded himself in a condo after a shooting late Friday night.

According to police, officers were investigating a shooting in the 1800 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive, Sarasota., and responded to a condo building at 1800 Benjamin Franklin Drive, just after 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

The preliminary investigation showed that a man, age 58, and a disgruntled former employee who was fired from his maintenance job at the condo building earlier this week, fired shots into an empty, parked car.

Shortly after firing into the car, the man was involved in a dispute with two other people. Officers believed the man barricaded on the condo property

Investigators say that members of the Sarasota Police Department SWAT and CNU (Crisis Negotiation Unit) were working to negotiate a peaceful outcome.

Benjamin Franklin Drive is closed in all directions from South Lido Key Beach to the 1500 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive, but is expected to be reopened soon.

“The Sarasota Police Department appreciates the patience and understanding from residents living along Benjamin Franklin Drive and visitors to the area,” said Sarasota Police.
