TAMPA, Fla. — Local authorities launched a death investigation Monday morning after a body was discovered in a retention pond near North Westshore Boulevard.
The incident began at 7:51 a.m. when Tampa Police officers were called to the 2200 block of N. Westshore Blvd. following a report of a person in the water. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased adult Black male.
Due to the location of the remains, members of the Tampa Police Dive Team were called to the scene to assist with the recovery.
The investigation is currently in its preliminary stages. Detectives are working to establish the man’s identity and notify his next of kin. While police remain on-scene gathering evidence to reconstruct the events leading up to the discovery, no details regarding a potential cause of death have been released.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office has taken custody of the body and will perform an examination to determine the official cause and manner of death.
“It is very early in this active investigation,” the Tampa Police Department stated. “Investigators are on-scene gathering evidence to determine the circumstances leading up to this incident.”
Police officials have indicated that more information will be made available as the investigation progresses.
