Federal personnel from the U.S. Department of Justice are monitoring polling locations across four Michigan cities during Tuesday’s primary election to observe compliance with federal voting rights statutes.
Staff from the Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section, alongside representatives from the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, are on-site in Detroit, Hamtramck, Lansing, and East Lansing.
The monitors are observing operations to check for adherence to federal requirements regarding ballot security, accessibility, and equal voting access.
“Our primary monitoring efforts continue today as we seek to ensure free and fair elections nationwide,” said Harmeet K. Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “The Department of Justice is devoting extensive resources to ensure uniform and nondiscriminatory monitoring. We appreciate the cooperation of these jurisdictions in promoting trust and transparency.”
Federal monitoring during state and local elections is part of the Department’s routine enforcement of laws including the Voting Rights Act, the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“Transparency promotes both trust and better behavior in election administration,” said Timothy VerHey, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan. “Our office is always going to be ready to lead in promoting free and fair elections.”
The Department stated that personnel will remain available to receive public inquiries and complaints regarding potential violations of voting laws through the Nov. 3, 2026, general election.
