US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on that the Justice Department (DOJ) has launched an investigation into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) following her suggestion that federal agents breaking state laws could be subject to arrest by local police.

The announcement follows a week marked by uncertainty over a planned deployment of federal forces to San Francisco. President Donald Trump ultimately postponed the deployment, citing a request from San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and conversations with “friends.” READ: Trump Halts Planned Federal Agent Surge In San Francisco After Talk With Mayor

During the period when the deployment was anticipated, former Speaker Pelosi and Representative Kevin Mullin (D-CA) suggested that local law enforcement could arrest federal agents if the agents were to violate California law during planned immigration raids.

Pelosi’s stated position was that individuals who break the law should be held accountable, regardless of whether they are federal immigration agents.

Bondi responded to Pelosi’s comments on Fox News.

“If you are telling people to arrest our ICE officers, our federal agents, you cannot do that, you are impeding an investigation, and we will charge them,” Bondi stated. She added, “You’ve got Pelosi out there saying to obstruct their investigation. You can’t do it, and we’re going to investigate her now.”

The Attorney General asserted that the DOJ would charge individuals who impede an investigation and announced that the department had launched an investigation into Pelosi’s statement.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche also reportedly threatened prosecution against California officials who support the arrest of federal immigration agents.

Pelosi’s original statement addressed the potential arrest of federal agents in the event they break state and local laws. She has not yet issued a public statement regarding the Justice Department’s announcement of the investigation.
