The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Fulton County, Georgia, on Friday, seeking access to records from the 2020 general election.

According to the filing from the DOJ’s civil division, federal officials are demanding documents that include ballot stubs and signature envelopes. The lawsuit states that Attorney General Pam Bondi is investigating the county’s “compliance with federal election law.”

The legal action follows an unanswered request for the documents sent to the Fulton County clerk in November, the department claims. When reached for comment regarding the new litigation, the Fulton County clerk’s office stated, “The Office of the Clerk of Superior and Magistrate Courts is not at liberty to comment on pending litigation.”

The lawsuit arrives just weeks after a separate high-profile legal battle in the state concluded. Last month, charges were dismissed against President Trump and 18 co-defendants who had been indicted in Fulton County over alleged efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results. Trump had pleaded not guilty in that case.

President Trump has consistently maintained that he won the 2020 election, including in Georgia, a key swing state certified for Biden.

While Friday’s filing focuses on document access rather than criminal charges, it signals a renewed federal focus on the administration of the 2020 vote in Georgia’s most populous county.
