Fox News contributor and George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley joined ‘Fox & Friends’ to dissect a high-profile federal investigation stemming from a violent protest at the University of California, Berkeley.
Turley characterized the turmoil at Berkeley as symptomatic of the nation’s most aggressive threat to civil liberties, warning that the indispensable right to free speech is at risk across American campuses.
The discussion focused on the violent protest that erupted outside a Turning Point USA event at the UC Berkeley campus, as the Tampa Free Press reported. Agitators reportedly threw rocks and set off flares in an attempt to block the venue, prompting a swift response from federal authorities.
Turley emphasized the gravity of the federal involvement, noting that the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force are now examining the incident.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has formally initiated a full-scale investigation into the violent protests.
The Antifa Factor: Turley identified the protest as a “signature event for Antifa,” which he branded as the “most violent anti-free speech movement in the history of the United States.” He stressed that the government must protect free speech activity and stop groups like Antifa from silencing others.
Failure of Security: Turley highlighted a “long-standing problem” where universities often fail to provide adequate security for conservative and libertarian speakers, sometimes canceling events under the pretense of security being too demanding. He argued that it is a core responsibility of the government to protect the constitutional right to free expression.
University Cooperation: Following the violence, UC Berkeley released a statement confirming it is conducting a full investigation and intends to fully cooperate with federal authorities to identify the “outside agitators” who attempted to disrupt the student event.
