Dozens of people were arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday during the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) latest targeted immigration enforcement operation.

DHS officials described the operation as a targeted “surge” intended to apprehend “criminal illegal aliens who flocked to the Tar Heel State because they knew sanctuary politicians would protect them.” The agency asserted that the enforcement action was necessary to combat illegal immigration in the state.

The operation has sparked debate, as Charlotte does not hold the designation of a “sanctuary city.” The city is, however, recognized as a “Certified Welcoming City,” a designation that indicates a commitment to immigrant inclusion and building supportive policies for illegal immigrants. Democratic leaders in Charlotte have strongly criticized the federal operation, essentially framing the concentrated enforcement as a political distraction ahead of next year’s pivotal midterm elections. They argue the timing and rhetoric are designed to inflame political tensions.

The Charlotte operation may be the first in a series of targeted crackdowns. Sources close to the matter indicate that top border officials are expected to continue their immigration enforcement surges in other cities led by Democratic administrations.

The city of New Orleans is reportedly being considered as the next location for a similar federal operation. The actions signal an ongoing federal focus on increasing immigration enforcement in localities perceived by the DHS as having lenient or welcoming policies toward illegal immigrants.
