TAMPA, Fla. – A Tampa Police Sergeant is currently in stable condition at a local hospital after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic early Sunday morning. The incident occurred just after midnight on March 15, 2026, as the officer was working a traffic post following a concert at Raymond James Stadium.

According to investigators, a 44-year-old man was driving a 2006 Chrysler Crossfire eastbound on West Martin Luther King Drive. Just past North Himes Avenue, the vehicle abruptly moved from the center lane into the outside lane.

The sergeant, who was wearing a reflective safety vest, had lawfully entered the roadway to direct traffic when the vehicle struck him. The driver did not stop immediately upon impact but did remain at the scene to cooperate with authorities.

The officer was transported to a nearby medical facility with serious injuries. Officials confirmed this morning that his injuries are not life-threatening and that he is in good spirits.

Police have cited the driver for Careless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury. Following a preliminary assessment, investigators stated that neither high speed nor driver impairment appeared to be factors in the collision.

“I’m incredibly grateful and relieved to know that one of our officers is ok after an incident that could’ve been deadly,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “It serves as a stark reminder that even in some of the most routine tasks, our officers risk their lives to keep our community, and in this case concert-goers, safe.”

The investigation remains open, and the department indicated that further details will be released as they become available.
