HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A driver was arrested Saturday morning after traffic deputies clocked a vehicle traveling 105 mph on the Suncoast Parkway near Spring Hill Drive, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Members of the sheriff’s office traffic unit were monitoring northbound traffic when they observed the speeding vehicle. Radar confirmed the car was traveling 35 mph over the posted 70 mph speed limit.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop and arrested the driver, identified as Rodney Watkins, 58. Watkins was taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center. His vehicle was towed from the scene.

In a statement following the arrest, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office issued a public warning regarding excessive speed.

“A reminder that while 35 mph over the speed limit may save you a few minutes, it can cost you far more, including your license, your freedom, or someone’s life,” the agency stated. “Slow down, stay alert, and remember: no destination is worth risking your life or the lives of others. Help us keep Hernando County’s roadways safe for everyone.”
