A Florida woman was arrested on a driving under the influence charge after allegedly falling asleep at the wheel and driving through an active traffic homicide investigation scene on Sunday, June 26.
According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were assisting the Florida Highway Patrol with a fatal crash investigation when a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Lauren Anderson entered the closed roadway.
Deputies reported that Anderson appeared to attempt to navigate around the barricaded area. In a July 27 statement posted to Instagram, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey stated that deputies shouted at Anderson to stop her vehicle, but she did not respond.
Deputies pursued the vehicle on foot and brought it to a stop. Upon contacting Anderson, officers noted that she was sluggish, slurring her speech, and struggling to exit her vehicle.
Prior to the incident at the crash scene, a witness had called authorities to report a potential drunk driver operating the same vehicle who had struck a construction barrier on Interstate 95.
Anderson declined to perform on-scene roadside sobriety tests and was transported to the Brevard County Jail. While in custody, Anderson submitted to breathalyzer testing, which revealed blood alcohol concentration levels of 0.195 and 0.209. The legal limit for driving in Florida is 0.08.
Anderson was subsequently booked on a DUI charge.
