DUI Manslaughter Charges Filed In Fatal St. Petersburg Crash

Head-on Collision Claims Life of Passenger, Injures Driver on 38th Avenue North

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A St. Petersburg man is facing multiple charges, including DUI manslaughter, after a head-on collision Wednesday evening that claimed the life of an elderly woman and seriously injured another driver.

According to police, Brett McClelland, 41, was driving a Subaru Outback westbound on the 7800 block of 38th Avenue North at approximately 6:30 p.m. on September 24th. Authorities state that McClelland’s vehicle swerved into oncoming traffic, where it struck a black Toyota sedan traveling eastbound.

The passenger in the Toyota, identified as Angel Shihate, 89, was transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries and later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Toyota, who has not been identified, was also hospitalized with serious injuries.

McClelland was treated for his own injuries at the scene and subsequently arrested. He was found to be under the influence at the time of the crash. McClelland has been charged with DUI manslaughter and DUI causing serious bodily injury.
