During College Commencement Season, The Right Is Left Out

It’s no secret that America’s college campuses are largely hubs for liberal groupthink and indoctrination—home to pro-choice and LGBT activists, Critical Race Theory, and a proliferation of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” faculty, as well as whiny students who don’t want American taxpayers to pay debts they voluntarily took on.

But a new analysis by the conservative Young America’s Foundation, or YAF, shows a new wrinkle on this conventional wisdom.

“For the past 30 years––since Young America’s Foundation has been keeping tabs on commencement addresses––a disproportionate number of speakers at our nation’s top colleges and universities have been liberal ideologues, big donors to liberal causes, and members of the woke media,” YAF noted in a press release earlier this week.

This year, “unsurprisingly, conservative voices were shut out from the 2022 spring commencement season.”

The group bases its report on those invited to speak to new graduates at the top 100 colleges identified by U.S. News & World Report.

In fairness to those schools who brought in leftists, it was not a complete shutout. Blowout might be a better description.

“With 53 liberal speakers imparting progressive ideas and just 3 conservatives addressing graduates, the bias in this year’s commencement season is undeniable,” YAF observed.

YAF offered some examples of the left-wing lineup.

People like Kal Penn, Deval Patrick, Taylor Swift, Samantha Power, Bob Woodward, Ken Jeong, Dwayne Wade, and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden would be on hand this commencement season to deliver “divisive” and “left-wing” speeches.

Even President Joe Biden himself will give a speech at his alma mater, the University of Delaware, “despite his sinking poll numbers and rising inflation,” and “so long as he can remember to show up on time,” YAF reported.

As for the conservatives, that trio included new Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, Tim Tebow, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece.

“Where are leading conservatives like Ron DeSantis, or Peter Schweizer who has a NYT best-selling book on China’s influence? Where are leaders like Kristi Noem or Ted Cruz, who led the charge against government overreach during COVID?” YAF asks.

The short answer: left out, by the left.

“Even as Americans are beginning to wake up and wholly reject the Left’s disastrous economic policies and culture wars, America’s universities are working overtime to rehab the Left’s failing image,” YAF observed.

“It’s truly sad that up until their very last day of school, students are being indoctrinated by speakers with a clear ideological agenda––people who have no intent on giving an actual inspiring, powerful sendoff to our future leaders.”
