PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – An 85-year-old Tarpon Springs man died Sunday afternoon after his pickup truck left the roadway and entered a retention pond in Pinellas County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. on July 19, 2026. The man was driving a Chevy Silverado westbound on County Road 296, just west of Belcher Road, when he lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons.
State troopers reported that the truck rotated, went off the highway, and submerged into an adjacent retention pond.
Emergency crews recovered the driver from the water and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The highway patrol has not released the identity of the driver, and the investigation into what caused the crash remains ongoing.
