ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – St. Petersburg Police have announced an arrest in connection with the fatal hit-and-run pedestrian crash that occurred in the Publix parking lot at 200 37th Ave. N.
Following an investigation, detectives successfully located the suspected vehicle. Police have arrested 85-year-old Darrell Elwin Briggs.
Briggs has been formally charged with leaving the scene of a crash, causing death.
ORIGINAL REPORT: St. Petersburg Police are actively searching for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of an elderly woman late this afternoon.
The incident occurred shortly before 5:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Publix supermarket located at 200 37th Ave. N.
According to police, an elderly woman was struck by a car in the busy shopping center parking lot. She sustained serious injuries in the collision and was immediately transported to a local hospital. Tragically, she later died of her injuries.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal crash fled the scene immediately following the incident, failing to render aid or notify authorities.
St. Petersburg Police have launched an active investigation into the crash and are urging the public to come forward with any information that could help identify and apprehend the driver.
