The ongoing funding standoff in Washington took an unexpected turn Saturday when Tesla CEO Elon Musk publicly volunteered to pay the salaries of federal airport security workers currently working without pay. The offer comes as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) enters its second month of a partial shutdown, triggered by a legislative deadlock over immigration enforcement.
“I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country,” Musk posted Saturday morning on X.
The funding gap is the result of a Democratic filibuster concerning DHS operations. While several agencies under the department’s umbrella—including TSA, FEMA, and Customs and Border Protection—have been forced into “emergency measures,” one agency remains untouched. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues to operate under the $75 billion “One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025,” which secured its budget through 2029.

The current impasse stems from Democratic demands for new oversight and restrictions on ICE following a series of fatal January shootings.
Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good were killed during confrontations between federal agents and “rapid response groups” protesting immigration enforcement in Minnesota. The federal presence in the region had been increased following reports of welfare fraud involving Somali migrants.
Democratic lawmakers are currently conditioning DHS funding on several policy changes. These include a ban on federal agents wearing masks during operations and a requirement for agents to obtain a “judicial warrant” before entering private property.
In the meantime, the lack of traditional payroll funding has led to an increase in TSA employees calling out of work or resigning. Travelers across the United States have reported significantly longer screening lines as a result of the diminished staffing levels. Federal officials have not yet commented on the legality or logistics of a private citizen funding a government payroll.
