Empty Daycares, Frozen Funds: Feds Expand Fraud Crackdown Beyond Minnesota

The Trump administration is hitting the brakes on federal child care funding, launching a freeze that began in Minnesota this week and is rapidly expanding into a nationwide audit aimed at rooting out systemic fraud.

The crackdown intensified Tuesday when Deputy HHS Secretary Jim O’Neill announced the immediate suspension of all federal child care payments to Minnesota. The decision follows a wave of allegations suggesting widespread abuse within the state’s subsidy system. According to multiple reports, this freeze is merely the first step, with federal officials now reviewing how taxpayer dollars are being utilized in states across the country.

“HHS has a clear duty to verify the proper use of taxpayer funds,” HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon said in a statement reported by the New York Post. “The documentation process exists to rule out fraud and confirm that funds are supporting legitimate child care providers.”

Viral Footage Sparks Scrutiny

The federal intervention comes days after YouTuber Nick Shirley released viral footage on Friday that appeared to show several Minnesota daycare centers—specifically Somali-run facilities receiving state funding—completely empty during operating hours.

The video reignited concerns over oversight in the state’s massive subsidy programs. Local outlet KSTP further highlighted the issue, reporting that one facility, the “Quality ‘Lerning’ Center,” had accumulated 95 separate violations between 2019 and 2023 yet continued to operate.

Walz Fires Back

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz immediately condemned the freeze, characterizing it as a political weaponization of administrative oversight. In a statement posted to X on Wednesday, Walz accused the White House of using fraud concerns as a pretext to dismantle social safety nets.

“This is Trump’s long game,” Walz wrote. “We’ve spent years cracking down on fraudsters. It’s a serious issue – but this has been his plan all along. He’s politicizing the issue to defund programs that help Minnesotans.”

The governor has faced heat on this issue before. Several state employees have previously accused his administration of retaliating against whistleblowers who flagged subsidy schemes. Walz acknowledged the difficulty of the situation during a November 30 appearance on Meet the Press, admitting that Minnesota’s generous programs sometimes “attract criminals.”

California in the Crosshairs

President Trump signaled that the investigation will not stop at the Midwest. Taking to Truth Social, the President suggested that investigators expect to uncover even larger-scale abuse on the West Coast.

“There is more FRAUD in California than there is in Minnesota, if that is even possible,” Trump wrote, blasting both Walz and California leadership. “Two Crooked Governors, two Crooked States!”

As the HHS ramps up its review, state agencies nationwide are bracing for similar scrutiny, with the administration signaling a zero-tolerance policy for documentation discrepancies in federal grant usage.
