Nancy Pelosi, the influential former Speaker of the House of Representatives and a towering figure in the Democratic Party, is reportedly preparing to announce her retirement, bringing a close to her five-decade career in politics.
The 85-year-old California Democrat, who was first elected to Congress during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, has remained quiet about her future, but numerous party officials and aides believe her decision to step down is imminent.
Pelosi’s expected departure would mark a profound shift in Congress. She holds an “iron grip on her caucus,” according to the reports, and her skills as a legislative leader are credited with marshaling votes to pass landmark laws, including the Affordable Care Act during the Obama administration and massive spending bills under President Joe Biden.
“I think she’s preparing to exit the stage,” a House Democratic leadership aide told NBC, adding that the Party “will not fully appreciate the time we have spent with her” until she’s gone.
The timing of the announcement is speculated to coincide with the results of Tuesday’s vote on redistricting, a California ballot measure known as “Prop 50,” which Democrats hope could net the party an additional five seats in the 2026 midterms.
“She’s going to go out with Prop 50 overwhelmingly passing, and what a crowning achievement for her to do that,” a California Democrat in the House stated.
The speculation intensified after Pelosi reportedly suggested she might not be present on the House floor to witness Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the current Democratic leader, be sworn in as the first Black Speaker after next year’s midterms, if democrats take control of the House.
Furthermore, she does not appear to be actively campaigning against two Democrats challenging her in the San Francisco primary election.
Pelosi’s long tenure has been defined by her legislative victories and her role as a formidable opponent to Republicans, particularly President Donald Trump. During his first term, the House under her leadership voted twice to impeach the Republican President.
More recently, the former Speaker was widely understood to have leveraged her deep base of supporters to pressure President Biden to end his faltering 2024 re-election campaign.
