A Michigan dad is being held without bond after prosecutors say he fired a handgun just inches from his son’s middle school building on Tuesday morning because staff wouldn’t let him inside.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy formally charged 44-year-old Shawntez Marshaun Gregory on Thursday in connection with the terrifying incident at Romulus Middle School.

According to authorities, the situation unfolded around 9:50 a.m. on January 6 at the campus on Wick Road. Gregory allegedly stood approximately one foot away from the exterior of the school and fired a handgun several times. While investigators noted he did not fire directly at the building, the gunshots immediately triggered an active shooter response.

The school went into complete lockdown as Romulus police officers rushed to the scene. Officers found Gregory outside and took him into custody without incident. Despite the chaos, police confirmed no students or staff were injured.

Prosecutor Worthy indicated the shooting was a retaliation for being kept out of the building.

“This case is every parent’s nightmare,” Worthy said in a statement. “The defendant allegedly fired a gun several times in proximity to the school when he was denied entry to get his son. The immediate reporting of an active shooter by the school allowed the Romulus Police to quickly respond and apprehend the defendant. Luckily, no one was harmed.”

Gregory faces a heavy list of felonies, including False Report or Threat of Terrorism, Intentional Threat to Commit an Act of Violence Against a School, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Possession of a Weapon in a Weapons-Free School Zone, and Reckless Use of a Firearm.

He was arraigned in 34th District Court Thursday afternoon and remanded to jail. He is scheduled to face Judge Lisa Robinson for a probable cause conference on January 20.
