Former law enforcement officer Leslie Boileau Jr., 33, was sentenced this morning to 25 years, 8 months, and 20 days in state prison for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, 25-year-old Polina Wright.
The distinctive sentence, handed down by Judge Timothy McCourt, was a thoughtful tribute to the victim, matching her exact age at the time of her death.
The Sentencing and Its Meaning
Boileau’s sentencing followed his conviction last month by a Marion County jury for Manslaughter by Use of a Firearm. The charge carried a potential maximum sentence of 30 years.
During the hearing, Judge McCourt considered Boileau’s background as a law enforcement officer, as well as emotional victim impact statements provided by Wright’s grieving family.
“I cannot think of a more just sentence to hold this offender accountable and pay respects to the victim and her grieving family,” said Bill Gladson, Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney. “This case reiterates the very real consequences of negligence and reckless actions.”
Details of the Fatal Incident
The tragic incident occurred on the night of September 19, 2024, at the couple’s home off SE 32nd Ave. in Ocala, FL. The Ocala Police Department (OPD) dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from Boileau around 11 p.m., in which he claimed his girlfriend was shot in the head while cleaning guns.
First responders found Boileau holding the fatally wounded victim, Polina Wright, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
During initial questioning, Boileau admitted that he and Wright had consumed alcohol earlier that evening. He stated that upon returning home, Wright asked him to teach her about cleaning and using firearms. Boileau claimed he cleared the weapon Wright was handling before she dry-fired it while pointing it at him.
He then picked up a semi-automatic rifle, pointed it at Wright, and fired. Boileau claimed the gun was dry-fired once before a second pull of the trigger fired an actual round, fatally injuring Wright.
Following a collection of evidence, a trajectory analysis of the crime, and the defendant’s own admissions, Boileau was arrested and charged. The conviction and subsequent unique sentence bring a close to the legal proceedings surrounding the fatal shooting.
