A Washtenaw County judge ruled Tuesday that former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore will not serve immediate jail time following a 2025 encounter at the home of a woman with whom he had a multi-year affair.
14A District Court Judge J. Cedric Simpson instead ordered Moore to serve 18 months of probation and pay approximately $1,100 in fees.
The sentencing stems from an incident on December 10, 2025, the same day Moore was fired by the University of Michigan for an inappropriate relationship with his executive assistant.
Following his dismissal, Moore confronted the woman at her apartment, blaming her for the loss of his position and allegedly threatening self-harm.
During the Tuesday hearing, Judge Simpson handed down suspended sentences of 180 days and 30 days. Under this arrangement, Moore will avoid incarceration entirely as long as he complies with the specific terms of his probation.

Those conditions include continuing mental health treatment, abstaining from alcohol, and maintaining zero contact with the woman involved.
“I don’t believe … incarceration would be an appropriate sentence,” Simpson said during the proceedings. However, the judge offered a stern verbal rebuke to the former coach, telling him, “Frankly, Mr. Moore, you had no right to do what you did…you had no right to spread your pain to her.”
The judge also noted that the victim’s own stance played a significant role in the leniency of the sentence, stating that the person saving Moore from the “full wrath of this court is the one you betrayed.”
Moore, 40, had previously pleaded no contest in March to misdemeanor charges of trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device.
These charges were part of a plea agreement that saw a felony home invasion charge dropped. The legal resolution follows a steep fall for Moore, who took over the Michigan program after Jim Harbaugh’s departure for the NFL but lasted only two seasons before the scandal led to his firing.
The court has scheduled a review hearing for October 2027 to ensure Moore has remained in compliance with the terms of his probation.
This sentencing concludes the criminal portion of a case that has shadowed the Michigan athletic department since late last year, occurring alongside other major Big Ten shifts, including Iowa’s recent one-year probation and the upcoming retirement of national officiating coordinator Steve Shaw.
