President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Saturday afternoon, unleashing a series of memes aimed at Iran’s military capabilities and the legacies of former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama. The posts followed a week of heightened tension in the Middle East, during which the U.S. military intercepted Iranian missiles and drones targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
The flurry of posts relied heavily on visual satire. One image depicted an Iranian drone crashing into the water alongside a large blue butterfly, with a caption comparing the aircraft to “butterflies” falling into the ocean.
Another image, appearing to be AI-generated, showed a U.S. battleship detonating five drones mid-air under the text, “Bye Bye, Drones.” A third post featured a split-screen comparison: one side showed a fleet of 159 Iranian ships flying large flags, while the other side showed the same vessels wrecked on the seafloor.
The social media activity comes on the heels of the launch of “Project Freedom,” an initiative described by the Trump administration as a plan to “guide” and protect ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, U.S. Navy destroyers escorting these vessels engaged Iranian forces, successfully shooting down several incoming projectiles.

The escalating friction has raised questions about the stability of a standing ceasefire between the two nations. During a press briefing on Friday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the U.S. military’s actions, dismissing claims that the ceasefire was “flimsy” due to American aggression. Rubio argued that the responsibility for the violence rested solely with Tehran.
“What you saw yesterday was U.S. destroyers moving through international waters, being fired upon by the Iranians, and the U.S. responded defensively to protect itself,” Rubio told reporters.
He emphasized that the military had no choice but to engage the incoming threats.
“If you fire a drone or a missile at our destroyer, what are we supposed to do, let it hit? We have to respond to it. We have to knock down the missile, and we have to knock out whatever it is that launched that missile. The alternative is to let it sink one of our ships. That’s crazy. So, of course, we responded to it.”
