TAMPA, Fla. – What a suspected car thief hoped would be a discreet getaway turned into an easy apprehension thanks to the vigilance of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Aviation Section.
On Tuesday, aerial surveillance played a crucial role in tracking a stolen vehicle, which led deputies to the suspect’s location and ultimately resulted in the man’s arrest.
The incident began when a stolen vehicle alert was issued near the intersection of 56th Street and Hanna Avenue. HCSO’s Aviation Section swiftly responded, locating the vehicle as it continued southbound. The aircraft maintained eyes on the vehicle, relaying real-time movements to deputies on the ground.

The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Robert Ritt, eventually pulled into a gas station. Deputies, guided by the aerial unit, moved in and arrested Ritt without incident.
Ritt is now facing multiple charges, including:
- Grand Theft Motor Vehicle
- Burglary Of An Unoccupied Conveyance
- Petit Theft First Degree ($100 Or More, But Less Than $750)
- Possession Of Burglary Tools
- Unlawful Possession Of A Stolen Credit Or Debit Card (five counts)
This successful operation highlights the effectiveness of HCSO’s aerial resources in combating crime and ensuring the safety of Hillsborough County residents.
