HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A bizarre and tragic sequence of events early Tuesday morning on Toucan Trail led to the death of a Spring Hill cyclist.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal incident occurred around 5:50 a.m., just east of Seaview Drive. Troopers say a 67-year-old Spring Hill man was riding an e-bike westbound when he lost control and fell.
Following the fall, the man was reportedly sitting in the eastbound traffic lane. At that same moment, a Mazda 3 sedan driven by a 63-year-old Spring Hill man was traveling westbound on Toucan Trail.

The vehicle collided with the cyclist while he was down in the roadway.
Emergency responders rushed the injured man to a local hospital, but he later died from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the sedan was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
