CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. – A two-vehicle collision at a major Citrus County intersection claimed the life of a Homosassa man and sparked a massive blaze during the Wednesday morning commute.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 7:50 AM at the intersection of US-19 and US-98. Investigators determined that an 85-year-old man was driving a Chrysler Pacifica northbound on US-19 while a 48-year-old Ocala man was traveling southbound in a tractor-trailer.
The crash happened when the driver of the Chrysler attempted to turn left onto US-98. Officials stated that the man entered the intersection on a red signal, placing the minivan directly in the path of the oncoming tractor-trailer.

The impact forced both vehicles into the southwest corner of the intersection. Shortly after coming to a stop, both the Chrysler and the tractor-trailer were engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Chrysler suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries but was not transported for medical treatment. Authorities remained on the scene throughout the morning to manage the fire and investigate the wreckage.
