A security team at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township shot and killed an armed man Thursday after he crashed his vehicle into the building. The collision caused the vehicle to catch fire, sending thick smoke into the air above the synagogue, which serves approximately 12,000 members and includes an early childhood center.

The incident triggered an immediate lockdown of the facility and the surrounding West Bloomfield School District.

According to reports, the man was armed with a rifle when he rammed the structure. Investigators are currently working to determine the man’s identity and his motive, noting that the probe is in its earliest stages.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard confirmed during a news conference that no children or staff members were harmed during the attack.

One security officer was struck by the suspect’s vehicle but did not sustain life-threatening injuries. Bouchard stated that security personnel spotted the man as he arrived and “engaged him in gunfire.”

Local law enforcement cleared the building shortly after the shooting. Footage from the scene showed dozens of police cruisers surrounding the campus as parents were eventually permitted to run into the learning center to retrieve their children.

The attack occurs during a period of heightened international tension. Security at Jewish institutions has been increased globally following the start of missile strikes between the U.S., Israel, and Iran on February 28. Federal authorities have recently issued warnings regarding potential threats from foreign operatives, and the FBI is currently monitoring reports of planned drone attacks in California.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement confirming she is monitoring the situation in West Bloomfield. “This is heartbreaking,” Whitmer said, adding that the state’s Jewish community “should be able to live and practice their faith in peace.”

In response to the violence, the Jewish Federation of Detroit issued an emergency advisory for all regional Jewish organizations to enter “lockout protocol,” prohibiting anyone from entering or exiting their buildings until further notice.

Temple Israel is recognized as the largest Reform synagogue in the United States. Its mission, according to its official website, focuses on community building and supporting Jewish populations globally through educational and family programming.
