Mexican law enforcement and federal agents in Sonora are now on high alert as the FBI coordinates an international effort to find 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. The mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1 in what authorities describe as a targeted abduction.
Because Tucson sits just 60 miles from the Nogales border crossing, the FBI has engaged its legal attaché office in Mexico City and its suboffice in Hermosillo, Sonora. These offices serve as a vital bridge between U.S. federal investigators and Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office.
While Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos noted there is currently no direct evidence Guthrie was taken across the border, the FBI has activated its dedicated border liaison agents to work alongside Mexican counterparts as a standard protocol for the region.
The search has already gained traction within Mexico’s local communities. Madres Buscadoras De Sonora (Searching Mothers of Sonora), a well-known volunteer organization that searches for the disappeared, confirmed they were contacted by a member of the Guthrie family.
The group has since issued a public plea on social media, asking residents in the state of Sonora to report any information regarding the elderly woman’s whereabouts.
This cross-border collaboration comes at a time when the U.S. State Department maintains a Level 3 travel advisory for Sonora, urging travelers to reconsider visiting the area due to the presence of cartels and criminal organizations. Hermosillo, located roughly 170 miles south of the border, remains the primary hub for any leads that might emerge from the Mexican side of the geographic corridor.
In Arizona, the investigation has entered its third week with a massive financial incentive for information. The total reward has climbed to over $200,000, following a $100,000 anonymous donation to the local 88-CRIME tipline and a matching $100,000 offer from the FBI.
Technicians are currently working to recover more footage from the Guthrie home after a Google Nest doorbell camera captured a suspected kidnapper. Investigators are analyzing the digital data to determine if an accomplice was involved. Meanwhile, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced this week that Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have been 100% cooperative and are officially cleared as suspects.
Sheriff Nanos emphasized that the family has voluntarily provided cars, phones, and home access to investigators, confirming they are being treated strictly as victims of a crime.
