The manhunt for the person who shot and killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk is intensifying as federal and state authorities release new details about the ongoing investigation. The shooting, which occurred on Wednesday at Utah Valley University, has been described by officials as a “political assassination.”

During a press briefing on Thursday, FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bowles announced that investigators have recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.

The rifle, descibed as bolt-action, was found in a wooded area where the shooter fled. In addition to the weapon, investigators have collected a footwear impression, palm print, and forearm imprints for analysis.

“Any attack on the First Amendment is an attack on the very foundation of our democracy,” Bowles stated, vowing that law enforcement would “relentlessly pursue” the case until they find the shooter.

The FBI is following up on more than 130 tips received from the public. Bowles urged anyone with video or images from the event to submit them to fbi.gov/UtahValleyShooting or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Authorities have described the suspect as being “of college age” and said he “blended in well” with the university setting. Though investigators have security footage of the suspect, they are not releasing it publicly at this time while they work to identify the individual. They may, however, seek the public’s help in the future if their efforts are unsuccessful.

The Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner expressed his devastation, saying the shooting is not representative of Utah’s character.

“We will not stand for what happened yesterday,” he said. “We are investing everything we have into this, and we will catch this individual.”
