Federal investigators have achieved a significant forensic breakthrough in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.
On Tuesday morning, FBI Director Kash Patel released newly recovered surveillance images showing an armed, masked individual outside Nancy’s home on the morning she vanished.
The images and video show a person wearing a ski mask, gloves, and a backpack, with what appears to be a firearm tucked into their waistband. Director Patel explained that the footage was not initially available because recording devices had been removed from the residence.
However, investigators and private sector partners were able to retrieve the images from residual data found in backend systems. The individual in the photos is seen appearing to tamper with the front-door security camera.
This development follows the expiration of a high-stakes ransom deadline. A note sent to local media outlets had reportedly demanded $6 million by 5 p.m. Monday, threatening the elderly woman’s life if the terms were not met. While the Guthrie family has publicly stated they are willing to pay for Nancy’s safe return, the FBI noted Monday evening that they were not aware of any direct, ongoing communication between the family and the suspected abductors.

Savannah Guthrie issued a new, somber video appeal on Monday, describing the situation as an “hour of desperation.” In a shift from earlier messages directed at the kidnappers, her latest post was an urgent call for public assistance. “We believe our mom is still out there,” she said, pleading for anyone who noticed anything unusual in the Tucson area—or elsewhere—to contact the authorities.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the night of January 31 after having dinner with relatives. She was reported missing the following morning when she did not log on for a scheduled church service livestream. Investigators found her personal belongings, including her phone and wallet, inside the home, but discovered blood on the front porch.
Further digital evidence showed her doorbell camera was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. on February 1, and her pacemaker app lost its connection roughly 40 minutes later.
Law enforcement continues to maintain a heavy presence at the Guthrie family residences in Arizona as they follow up on these new leads. Despite the release of the surveillance photos, no suspects or persons of interest have been named. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to Nancy Guthrie’s location or the arrest of those responsible.
