FBI MISSING Persons

FBI: U.S. Missing Persons and Kidnappings, Can You Help?

Each year, 800,000 children are reported missing in America, including some who are lost, injured, have run away from home or are abducted, according to the center, the nation’s leading clearinghouse of information about missing children.

As of December 31, 2019, the National Crime Information Center had nearly 87,500 active missing person records.

Youth under the age of 18 account for 35 percent of the records, and 44 percent of the missing person records are people under 21.

Missing person records are retained indefinitely—unless a missing individual is located or the reporting agency cancels the entry. During 2019, law enforcement agencies across the country entered more than 609,000 missing person records.

During the same time period, reporting agencies canceled more than 607,000 records.

While the fear of being kidnapped may persist for one’s entire life, in 2019 the number of missing persons under the age of 21 was much higher than those 21 and over, with 235,367 females under 21 reported missing, and 62,823 females over the age of 21 reported missing.

In a new series, we will highlight three missing person files from the FBI, to keep these names and faces out in the public domain. Under each profile, there are anonymous tip links and field office contacts.
