FBI and Local Partners Celebrate Success of ‘Operation Summer Heat’ and Announce Long-Term Federal Commitment to Combat Gang Violence
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is providing a significant boost to law enforcement efforts in Louisiana, committing additional resources to combat violent crime and gang activity across the state. The announcement follows the success of “Operation Summer Heat,” a multi-agency initiative that served as a model for future collaborations.
Jonathan Tapp, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI New Orleans Field Office, credited the DOJ’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section (VCRS) for providing extra resources, calling it a “major boost” to ongoing efforts. The VCRS specializes in prosecuting serious gang-related cases and brings a proven track record of disrupting and dismantling criminal organizations.

The commitment stems from a spring meeting between Governor Jeff Landry, the FBI, and other law enforcement partners to address the surge in violence plaguing neighborhoods in Baton Rouge and beyond. This led to “Operation Summer Heat,” an 11-agency collaborative effort that saw the FBI lead local, state, and federal law enforcement and prosecutors in a targeted offensive against violent gangs.
“The Department of Justice believed so much in our potential success; its leaders committed extra trial attorneys to come to Louisiana to prosecute the violent criminals we apprehend,” said Tapp. “And this assistance is crucial to our long-term success. The VCRS brings experience and a proven track record of disrupting and dismantling criminal organizations.”
He added that this commitment is not a temporary measure but a long-term investment, which will ensure that “the worst of the worst potentially face a long stint in federal prison once we make the cases.”

“Operation Summer Heat” was part of a broader, Bureau-wide FBI initiative to “crush violent crime.” The results in Baton Rouge were significant. Over several months, more than 30 law enforcement operations were carried out, targeting multiple locations and gang members. The primary focus was on four specific gangs: “Vultures,” “Bleedas,” “60 Gang,” and “BBG,” all believed to be responsible for murders, robberies, and drug trafficking. The operations targeted four neighborhoods where the gangs were most active.
The collective effort resulted in more than 100 arrests, the seizure of over 100 firearms, dozens of machine gun conversion devices, fentanyl and other dangerous drugs, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. The majority of those arrested face multiple charges in state and federal court.

Tapp confirmed that the FBI brought in agents and intelligence personnel from its Violent Crime Rapid Deployment Team, from offices across the country, to augment local personnel. “This is just the beginning of our intensified focus on violent crime and gangs,” he said. “We will continue that effort in Baton Rouge and across Louisiana.”
