Border Patrol agents have arrived in Raleigh, North Carolina, with immigration enforcement operations expected to begin as early as today, marking an expansion of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) intensified enforcement strategy in Democrat-led cities.
The Department of Homeland Security has stated its intention to intensify immigration enforcement in cities with Democratic leadership as part of a broader effort aimed at arresting undocumented immigrants and cracking down on crime.
Two unnamed state lawmakers were reportedly informed on Monday about the impending immigration sweep. They anticipate that the Raleigh operation will be significantly smaller in scope than a recent enforcement action conducted in Charlotte.
The operation follows a larger sweep conducted over the weekend in Charlotte, where federal agents arrested more than 130 people. DHS officials confirmed that 44 of those arrested had a prior criminal record, a group which included “two known gang members.” The Charlotte operation serves as a recent precedent for the scale and stated focus of these targeted enforcement actions.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein released a statement acknowledging the possible operation in the state capital today. Governor Stein urged Raleigh residents to remain peaceful and emphasized the importance of reporting any instances of wrongdoing directly to local law enforcement authorities.
