A federal judge ruled Friday that President Donald Trump’s attempt to add a documentary proof of citizenship requirement to the federal voter registration form cannot be enforced, dealing a significant blow to the administration’s election overhaul efforts.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C., sided with a coalition of Democratic and civil rights groups that had sued the Trump administration over the executive order.

Judge Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the proof-of-citizenship directive is an unconstitutional violation of the separation of powers.

The directive was a key component of the administration’s efforts, arguing that such a mandate is necessary to restore public confidence and ensure that only Americans are voting in U.S. elections.

The ruling maintains the existing requirements for the federal voter registration form, preserving the current registration process for millions of voters across the country.
