The U.S. Department of Justice sent observers to polling locations across Massachusetts on Tuesday to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws during the Commonwealth’s primary election.
Federal personnel are on the ground in Boston, New Bedford, and Lowell. A total of 12 monitors are working across these three cities, with additional support coming from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The effort is organized through the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, which regularly dispatches staff across the country to enforce federal voting laws and ensure equal ballot access for eligible voters.
“Monitoring is an essential duty for the Civil Rights Division during election season,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Nonpartisan, nondiscriminatory monitoring efforts promote transparency, accountability, and most importantly trust in our federal elections.”
Tuesday’s deployment is part of a broader nationwide effort. So far this primary season, the department has sent more than 80 monitors to over 200 polling sites across eight states. During the 2022 midterm primary season, the department deployed personnel to nine states.
The Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section oversees the enforcement of several key statutes, including the Voting Rights Act, the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, and the Civil Rights Acts.
Staff from the Civil Rights Division will remain available to field questions and take complaints from the public regarding potential voting rights violations through the general election on Nov. 3.
