Federal Probe Into Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar Started Under Biden DOJ

A quiet federal investigation into Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar has come into focus this week after President Trump posted about it on Truth Social.

While the President brought the issue up on Monday, sources say the inquiry actually began back in 2024 under the Biden DOJ. Despite the recent attention, insiders familiar with the matter tell the New York Times that the case has largely stalled because investigators haven’t found enough evidence to move forward.

The review started in June of 2024. Prosecutors in Washington and the Justice Department’s public integrity unit looked into Omar’s campaign spending, her finances, and her contacts with a foreign citizen. Even though the investigation started, it appears to have hit a wall. One person familiar with the internal discussions said that a lack of proof has kept the case from going anywhere.

The investigation was suddenly thrust into the spotlight when President Trump posted on Truth Social. In a statement about shaking up the team that handles immigration raids in Omar’s district, he singled her out Monday.

“The DOJ and Congress are looking at ‘Congresswoman’ Ilhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars,” Trump wrote. “Time will tell all.”

Omar pushed back quickly. She denied doing anything wrong and said Trump was just trying to distract people.

“Sorry, Trump, your support is collapsing and you’re panicking,” she wrote on X Monday. “Right on cue, you’re deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories about me.” She added that years of investigations have found nothing and told the President to get his “goons” out of Minnesota.

Even though this specific inquiry seems paused, Omar has dealt with questions about money in the past.

In 2019, the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board fined her $3,500. They found she had used campaign funds for personal costs like travel and legal fees for her divorce. Around that same time, officials noted she filed joint tax returns with her partner, Ahmed Hirsi, while still legally married to another man.

Records show her campaign also paid a significant amount to the E. Street Group, a firm co-owned by Tim Mynett. Federal Election Commission reports indicate her campaign paid the firm over $1.7 million starting in 2018.

The payments drew scrutiny because they began shortly before Mynett’s ex-wife claimed in divorce filings that he was having an affair with Omar. Omar and Mynett later married. Despite these past headlines, the current probe by the DOJ has not resulted in any charges.
