A fierce legal and political showdown is erupting in the Twin Cities as the Department of Justice launches an investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Federal prosecutors are examining whether the two Democratic leaders criminally interfered with federal immigration enforcement efforts amid ongoing clashes between anti-ICE demonstrators and agents.

The probe comes as tensions mount outside local ICE facilities, where protests against “Operation Metro Surge” — a federal sweep that has reportedly netted 3,000 arrests since November — have intensified.

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche characterized the rhetoric coming from state and local leadership as potentially criminal. Blanche specifically cited instances where the leaders allegedly encouraged citizens to “resist” or report federal agents to local emergency services.

“When the mayor suggests that he’s encouraging citizens to call 911 when they see ICE officers, that is very close to a federal crime,” Blanche told reporters, confirming that sources have indicated prosecutors are looking into both Walz and Frey for impeding law enforcement duties.

Governor Walz responded to the news with a blistering rebuke, accusing the Trump administration’s Justice Department of political retribution.

“Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic,” Walz said in a statement. He pivoted attention to the death of Renee Good, a figure associated with the protests, adding, “The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.”

Mayor Frey also dismissed the investigation, describing it as an intimidation tactic meant to silence local dissent against federal policies.

The investigation unfolds against a backdrop of volatility on the ground. For over a week, demonstrators have gathered outside ICE facilities, with federal officials describing the scene as a “precarious situation.” DHS Secretary Trisha McLaughlin pushed back against descriptions of the gatherings as peaceful, labeling some participants “rioters and terrorists” who have allegedly launched fireworks at officers, slashed vehicle tires, and vandalized property.

Conversely, a U.S. District judge recently issued a ruling restricting law enforcement’s use of tear gas on peaceful demonstrators, a move that highlights the conflicting narratives regarding the nature of the unrest.

As temperatures in Minneapolis are forecast to plunge below zero, authorities have begun dousing campfires used by protesters to stay warm, signaling that the standoff between federal enforcement and local resistance is unlikely to thaw anytime soon.
