HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to a critical carbon monoxide exposure in Carrollwood on Monday

A 911 call came into the dispatch center from an individual reporting an unresponsive victim in a residence.

HCFR’s Engine 6 was the first arriving unit on the scene.

Crews from Engine 6 and HCFR’s Heavy Rescue 42, which dually operates as a hazardous incident team, quickly determined a car had been running overnight, filling the home with carbon monoxide.

Firefighters from both units put on respiratory protection and rescued three adults from the residence. All three of those individuals were transported in critical condition.

Two other adults who arrived to check on the occupants were also overcome by carbon monoxide and were transported in stable condition. Crews then ventilated the house and used gas-detecting equipment to ensure zero carbon monoxide levels.

“Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas. Cars kept in attached garages and gas appliances can quickly disperse carbon monoxide into a structure. The only way to detect harmful levels is by installing carbon monoxide detectors,” said HCFR.

HCFR encourages you to install these life-saving devices, and if you have them in use already, regularly check them to ensure they are operating correctly.
