The friction began when President Trump publicly claimed that Prime Minister Meloni “begged” him for a photograph during the international gathering. Meloni swiftly and firmly denied the assertion, labeling Trump’s version of events as “completely made up.”
Expressing her frustration with the situation, the Italian Prime Minister added: “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies.”
Rather than de-escalating, Trump reiterated his stance in a follow-up statement. He maintained that Meloni was “a big fan” of his, but drew a line regarding their political differences.
“I don’t want her as a fan,” Trump said, pointing specifically to her administration’s current approach to the conflict over the Strait of Hormuz.
The verbal dispute has quickly translated into official diplomatic fallout. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stepped in to condemn the American president’s rhetoric, calling Trump’s remarks “serious and offensive.” As a direct result of the exchange, Tajani canceled his scheduled upcoming trip to the United States.
This public clash marks a significant low point for the two leaders, whose relationship had already begun to deteriorate earlier this year. Ties initially soured after Meloni took issue with Trump’s public commentary regarding the head of the Catholic Church, flatly calling his criticisms of Pope Leo XIV “unacceptable.”
