A New Year’s Eve celebration at an upscale Swiss ski resort ended in catastrophe this week when a fire tore through a packed bar, leaving at least 40 people dead and injuring approximately 115 others.

The blaze broke out at Le Constellation, a popular venue in the resort town of Crans-Montana, turning a night of revelry into a chaotic fight for survival.

While the exact cause remains under investigation, authorities have zeroed in on the possibility of a “flashover”—a terrifying phenomenon where superheated gases cause everything in a room to ignite almost simultaneously, leading to a rapid explosion of fire.

Witnesses at the scene described a sudden and intense inferno. Some accounts suggest the fire may have been sparked by pyrotechnics, specifically sparklers placed in champagne bottles, though officials have not confirmed this and cautioned that a full forensic analysis will take time.

The aftermath has brought an agonizing wait for families of the missing. Swiss authorities warned that the intensity of the fire has made immediate identification difficult, and it could take days before all victims are formally named.

Emergency crews and investigators remain on site as the resort town grapples with the scale of the tragedy.
