Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced a sweeping legal offensive against California and Governor Gavin Newsom, filing a lawsuit in the United States Supreme Court over California’s policy of allegedly issuing commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to illegal immigrants.
The aggressive legal action follows a fatal tragedy in Florida involving an illegal migrant truck driver accused of killing three people after an illegal U-turn. The driver, who was reportedly brought to Florida from California, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide.
Appearing on Fox & Friends on Thursday, Uthmeier stated that the incident was a direct consequence of California’s sanctuary state policies that threaten public safety across the nation. “We can do everything right here in Florida… it’s illegal to give any license to illegal aliens, but when California engages in this unlawful behavior, we are harmed, we suffer,” Uthmeier said.
A ‘Tragedy’ Foretold
Uthmeier revealed that the state’s investigation into the fatal crash uncovered shocking details about the accused driver’s licensing process. RELATED: Failed Exams, Fatal U-Turn: Illegal CDL Holder In Triple Fatality Florida Crash Had History Of Flunking
“Our investigation shows he failed his CDL license exam 10 times in the two months before this tragedy took place,” Uthmeier stated. The Attorney General added that the driver could not speak English, and yet the license was wrongfully provided by a California company.
Florida is now pursuing multiple avenues of accountability:
- Criminal Prosecution: The driver will be prosecuted “to the fullest” and faces “many decades behind bars” before ultimately being deported.
- Civil/Criminal Investigation: Authorities are investigating the license company that issued the permit.
- Supreme Court Lawsuit: Florida is “suing California and Gavin Newsom in the United States Supreme Court” to hold the state accountable for the dangerous policy.
Federal Backing and 17,000 Revocations
The lawsuit gains context from federal confirmation of widespread unlawful licensing. According to the Secretary of Transportation, California was “caught red-handed,” and 17,000 illegally issued trucking licenses are now being revoked nationwide.
Uthmeier emphasized that California’s actions are wrong and that Florida, as a “law and order state,” is committed to holding them accountable in court.
